[1/2] Virtual Agent Economies (AI column)

I studied another one. fancy whitepaper This time from Google on the subject of agency economics. In this work, they explore the emergence of a new layer of the economy, controlled by autonomous agents of artificial intelligence. They set out to understand how the mass adoption of such agents would affect the economy and lead to a separate virtual agent economy, where digital agents interact, transact, and coordinate at a scale and speed beyond human control. To describe this phenomenon, the authors introduce the concept of sandbox economy and propose to characterize it on two axes. n

  1. Origin: spontaneous emergent vs. intentionally designed
  2. Degrees of separation from the existing human economy: permeable vs. impenetrable

The main conclusion of the work: without purposeful intervention, the probability of spontaneous formation of a vast agent economy with a high degree of permeability of borders, i.e. closely related to the real market, is high. There are pros and cons. (+)Such a system promises unprecedented opportunities for coordination and automation – agents are able to create economic value by interacting with each other without direct human involvement. (-) Such a system has significant risks: new forms of systemic economic risk are possible. (For example, instant flash crises due to ultrafast AI transactions) Increased inequality if advanced agents gain an advantage over weaker ones

The authors conclude that proactive design of rules and infrastructure for these agent markets is necessary. They propose a range of measures and mechanisms – from auctions for the equitable distribution of resources to the creation of “mission” economies for the common good – that would guide the evolution of the agent economy in a safe direction. The key recommendation is a deliberate architecture of virtual markets, embedding the principles of trust, transparency and accountability, so that the coming changes in the economy serve the long-term prosperity of humanity.

In prolongation, I will tell you a little about the methodology of analysis of authors.
