[1/3] Octoverse 2025: A New Developer Joins GitHub Every Second as AI Takes TypeScript to #1 (Category Engineering)

The latest GitHub Octoverse report appeared in late October. It describes the state of OSS, or Open Source Software—more precisely, the software-development ecosystem on GitHub. The 2025 report highlights record community growth and AI tools’ major influence on development processes and technology choices.

Start with its methodology. Unlike many similar reports, it is not based on surveys, which helps show what is actually happening with repositories, code, and developers:

  • Data source and period: it analyzes GitHub activity from 1 September 2024 to 31 August 2025, the “Octoverse Year.” Data comes directly from platform events such as commits, pull requests, and issues, primarily in public repositories unless stated otherwise. Comparing the same months in 2024 and 2025 allows for seasonality in year-on-year trends.
  • Coverage and sample size: the report covers GitHub’s whole developer population, which exceeded 180 million in 2025, 36 million more than a year earlier.
  • Geography: it reflects the global developer distribution. Asia and other emerging regions are growing fastest. India added more developers than any other country, over 5.2 million in a year, and became the second-largest community after the US.
  • Industry coverage: a developer here means any GitHub user involved in creating software. The report includes open and corporate projects. Although 81.5% of recorded contributions were in private repositories used for internal company development, more than 63% of repositories remained public or open source. It therefore covers everyday corporate work and the open ecosystem supporting it.
  • Additional research: the report is quantitative and based on telemetry, but includes targeted qualitative work, such as developer interviews about code review to assess GitHub Copilot Code Review. Those findings appear in the analysis: for example, 72.6% of interviewees reported more effective reviews with AI.

Now to the main findings.

👀 Octoverse 2025 ecosystem figures

  • Total projects reached 630 million, including 4.3 million AI projects, with more than 180 million developers.
  • Public contributions, including commits and PRs, reached 1.12 billion. Monthly pull-request merges averaged 43.2 million, up 23% year over year.
  • TypeScript and Python became the most popular languages.
