A Brief History of Bjarne Stroustrup, the Creator of C++ (Category Engineering)
Interesting. history Bjarne Stroustrup, Danish computer scientist, author of the C++ programming language. The whole story was filmed in the town of Aarhus (Denmark)where he was born in 1950 He studied at the University of Aarhus, where he also received a master’s degree. He then defended his PhD at Cambridge and then worked at Bell Labs alongside Kernighan, Ritchie, Morris and others.
Here are some interesting things about his biography, not all of which I knew. Bjarne got into programming “accidentally”: he chose the direction “mathematics with dataology”, not realizing that “datologi” is computer science.
- He was heavily influenced by Kristen Nygaard. (Kristen Nygaard)He is the creator of Simula and the concept of object-oriented programming; the ideas of structuring code in Simula are still for him.
At Bell Labs, Bjarne was interested in operating systems and machine architecture and, not finding the right language, decided to “make your own”.
The first version of the language was called "C with Classes" - actually C with classes in the style of Simula; then the name was changed to C. + + (incrementer in C)Because it was a "cute and unusual" name.
They did not forget to discuss C++ itself, its purpose and history of development.
- At one point Bjarne knew about 24 programming languages (Snowball, Algol 68, PL/I, PL/360 etc.) But he says languages used to be easier to learn because they didn't have a huge "baggage" and ecosystem.
Bjarne describes the philosophy of C++ with a metaphor: “I had to grow a weed, not a rose”, i.e. a language that survives and grows without constant watering by the author.
C++ did not have a marketing campaign and a “sponsor” – the language spread organically, through the benefit and community. - Through. 10 In the years since its inception, C++ already had about a million users, and now it is estimated that about one million users. 7 There are millions of engineers using language.
In the end, I made some points.
- The role of chance is about entering the profession and that serious career paths in IT often begin not with a thoughtful plan, but with curiosity and random choice.
- The power of good ideas and mentors is about meeting Nygård and getting to know Simula and that one strong mentor and one strong idea. (OOP in Simula) They can guide a whole generation of technology.
- Creating a tool for yourself rather than for the market is about focusing on real engineering pain rather than marketing, giving the tool a chance to become the de facto standard.
- Sustainability is more important than “perfection” – here the metaform of the weed suggests that designing for the real world, rather than a perfect academic design, leads to the survival of those who successfully work in the production rather than on paper.
- Growth without marketing is about the fact that for infrastructure technologies, organic adoption and solved tasks are more valuable than PR.
- Attitude and motivation - Bjarne continues to teach, perform and code because he is "just curious to see how it's used and it's nice to communicate with people." As a result, long-term motivation is based on pleasure in the process and responsibility for the consequences of your work.
