AI Dev Live 2026: Did AI Speed Up Your Development?
At AI Dev Live 2026 I'll talk about how to tell whether AI has sped up your development (Category #AI4SDLC)
Studies of how AI affects software development reach different results, from more tasks completed to experienced engineers taking longer. How can these findings both be true, and what applies to your team?
Using work from Microsoft Research, METR, and Google, we'll look at how experimental conditions, task selection, and measurement affect the result. I'll present a way to assess AI's impact at three levels: who's using the tools and how, what's changing in the development flow and the time engineers spend on tasks, and what gains remain after the cost of models, infrastructure, the platform team, and review. This is roughly the approach I was aiming for when I led AI4SDLC adoption at a large fintech.
We'll discuss how to compare telemetry with developers' experience, account for rework and agents working in parallel, and distinguish an observed improvement from a demonstrated effect of adoption. Attendees will come away with a basis for evaluating their team's AI practices and deciding how to develop them.
