CNCF Platforms White Paper - II
I will continue to talk about the white paper about the platforms that I started talking about. first-post. The document was all 7 The first four of which we discussed earlier, and in this post we will talk about the challenges when creating platforms, how to measure their success, and the set of opportunities that platforms provide, we will discuss in the last post, which will even have pictures:)
5. Challenges when implementing platforms Platforms promise a lot, but there are challenges on the way to implementation. The authors highlight the following: Platform teams should treat their platforms as a product and develop them with users. Platform teams need to carefully choose their priorities and initial partnerships with application teams. Platform teams should seek support from the leadership team (conditionally) Impact on Value Streams The whole part revolves around a product approach where the platform should evolve as a customer-facing product. (though dev2dev) and solve the problems of its users. Separately, the importance of having product managers who work with users to collect expectations, create a platform development roadmap and collect feedback from users is mentioned. For the adoption of platform solutions, it is very important to choose the right features (capabilities) For example, the authors mention pipelines, databases, observability, which are fundamental and are necessary for almost everyone.) Next, the authors give recommendations on how to reduce the burden on platform teams by Building a thinnest viable platform on top of service providers Use open source frameworks, tools, and templates and combine them together to provide apps to teams Make sure the platform teams are staffed enough for the complexity of their domain and the number of customers
6. How to measure the success of platforms Here, the authors give categories of metrics by which you can evaluate the success of platform teams and their platforms. User satisfaction and productivity metrics by user (DAU and retention)User NPS, Productivity Metrics (For example, the SPACE framework, which I already have. told) Organizational efficiency - here you can evaluate the speed of providing opportunities (For example, provisioning of databases)Creating a completely new service (from repository, assembly and deployment and appearance at production)The time it takes a new user to make the first changes to the product code. Product and feature delivery: deployment frequency, lead time for changes, time to restore services after failure, change failure rate (You can read more in the book "Accelerate", about which I have already told). The main goal of platform teams is to align the IT capabilities and value streams of the company. As a result, the success of platforms is measured by the success of the organization’s products and applications.
The possibilities of platforms can be read in last post
