Code of Leadership S2E18: The Product Engineer — How the Programmer's Role May Change Over the Next Three Years
Writing code is becoming noticeably faster. But if a growing share of implementation can be delegated to AI tools, what remains at the core of a programmer's work: knowledge of syntax, engineering judgment, or responsibility for the product as a whole?
In a new episode of Code of Leadership on Tuesday, September 8, at 19:00, we will explore this question with Gleb Mikheev, CPO of GigaAgent at Sber. Gleb has worked in commercial software development since 2003. He worked at NVIDIA and Skillbox, founded and spent nine years growing a custom software studio, led the FrontendConf program for eight years, and now chairs the program committees of AgenticDevConf and AI Native Conf.
Gleb also writes the excellent Telegram channel Tired CTO, where he covers agentic development, engineering culture, team management, and product work.
We will discuss:
- which changes are already visible in software development and which remain attractive forecasts;
- what is driving those changes and why they cannot be reduced to one more tool;
- how expectations for developers are changing, and how a product engineer differs from someone who simply closes assigned tickets;
- what happens to junior engineers as routine entry-level tasks are increasingly automated, and how to train new engineers without placing them in an artificial greenhouse;
- how experienced developers can keep learning, test new approaches, retain technical depth, and avoid falling behind;
- what the programmer's role may look like over the next three years, and which claims are still too early to treat as facts.
I also want to test the boundary of sensible product thinking. Is a product engineer someone who understands the user's problem and owns the outcome, or merely a convenient label for a person expected to act as product manager, analyst, architect, and developer at the same time?
If you have questions for Gleb or examples of how development work is already changing, bring them to the comments.
