How an Engineer Learns to Reach Agreement (Category #Leadership)
On October 2 at 10:30 Moscow time, we will talk live with Sergey Kiselev about how an engineer changes when more and more people begin to depend on his decisions. Sergey has spent more than ten years working with Yandex and Yandex Cloud infrastructure, and since 2023 he has been building the Development Platform at MWS Cloud Platform. He also serves on the DevOops program committee and runs the channel “Буду погроммистом!” (https://t.me/intr13_riot).
I am interested in this combination of roles: Sergey builds tools for colleagues, hires engineers, and helps decide what the community discusses on stage. I want to test how engineering convictions hold up when they meet people, deadlines, and the consequences of one’s own decisions.
We will discuss:
- What did Sergey have to reconsider when moving from Yandex to MWS, and what is hardest for a strong engineer to stop doing personally after becoming a manager? - How are shared platform rules created: who may opt out of a standard, and who pays for postponing a migration if the team has already promised a delivery date to a customer? - In hiring, how do you distinguish compatibility with the team from the desire to hire people similar to yourself—and how do you spot your own selection mistake six months later? - What does a manager do during an incident: when should they investigate the technical details themselves, and when should they take over communication? We will recall Sergey’s HighLoad++ talk about a major incident. - What does the word DevOps mean today, and what should a beginning infrastructure engineer learn independently if AI takes over some of the routine work?
We will ask Sergey to separate events that actually happened from forecasts and to name a position of his own that he is prepared to challenge. And toward the end, we will talk about the applied audiophilia mentioned in his channel description.
