In our time of AI technology growth and the associated explosive increase in power consumption, understanding the principles of power grids has become a necessity... so I decided to read Andrei Kosko’s popular science book on this topic. The book was published in a distant 2019 It was a year when AI data centers were not yet on the agenda, but its relevance only became higher. Since it's nauchpop, the book on the fingers answers questions of the species. What is energy and where does it come from? When will the oil really run out? Will we switch to electric cars with solar panels? What are nuclear and renewable energy? How real is global warming and what are the energy crises? Interestingly, after the release of the first book, Andrei wrote a sequel to "Big Energy". What and how to live with it?, which was published in 2022 year (I ordered it after reading the first book.).

If you highlight the key ideas that are useful for technical managers, they are: 1. Basics of power systems The author systematically explains the basic principles of power grids, which are critical to understanding infrastructure constraints. Balancing supply and demandThe key task of managing any power grid is to constantly maintain a balance between energy production and consumption. Any imbalances cause serious problems, which usually manifest themselves in changing the frequency of the network. When the frequency suddenly rises or decreases, it can cause damage to electrical equipment and eventually power outages. - Three-level structure Electrical systems: generation, transmission of energy and its distribution. The author explains how this works at scale. 2. Challenges for power grids from AI loads
