I read a book on vacation. 2016 Ian François about Half Life, which made a revolution in the FPS genre in the late 90s. Fwtor didn’t just decide to retell the game – he set out to follow Half-Life’s journey from design to triumph, as well as show how Valve found its unique style and what decisions determined the success of the project. In general, the book consists of three parts: historical, narrative and analytical.

1In the historical The part tells the backstory of Valve’s founding and chronicle the development of Half-Life. François describes the biography of Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington – former employees of Microsoft, who are in the 1996 The year Valve was founded, inspired by the idea to make something bigger than the typical shooters of the time. The reader will learn what problems the young team faced: from the technical limitations of the engine to unsuccessful prototype levels, as well as the postponement of the release of the game for the whole year – despite the approach of the announced release date of the game. 1997Valve has chosen to make everything perfect.

2ова In the narrative François literally chronologically retells the plot of Half-Life, from Gordon Freeman's morning trip to the Black Mesa Research Center to the final meeting with the mysterious G-Man. Such a detailed retelling may surprise a sophisticated reader, because many have played the game themselves more than once. However, the author does this not for the sake of spoilers, but to analyze the structure of the story, note the key points of level design and game design techniques. It just so happens that I'm in 1998 The year when the first Half-Life was released, the game was not yet played, and by the time the second one came out, it was not played, so this book helped me understand what the plot of the cult game was.

3In the analytical Part of the author shares the conclusions about the legacy of Half-Life and the impact of the game on the industry. He explores the sources of developer inspiration. (From classic shooters like Doom to horror movies and science fiction)Valve's internal philosophy and how Half-Life's success influenced the studio's future decisions. He tries to answer the main question: what is the phenomenon of Half-Life? Among the topics raised is the innovative 90Integration of story and gameplay, where the story is told through the environment and scripts of events, rather than through screensavers. The author discusses how Valve found its design style – a culture that values experimentation, team innovation and attention to detail.

Half-Life and Valve have greatly influenced the history of computer games. Half-Life is considered one of the greatest games of all time, which fundamentally changed the approach to creating shooters. Before its release, the plot in action games was presented at best through briefings or videos between levels. Valve showed how you can tell a complex story inside the gameplay – the player himself experiences all the events, remaining in the role of the character. From a technical point of view, Half-Life also set the bar. The game is built on a heavily modified Quake engine called GoldSrc, and the developers were not afraid to delve into the code of their predecessors to realize their ideas. The result was groundbreaking solutions: advanced enemy AI, real-time scripting events not previously seen in FPS dynamics, and a modular game architecture that allowed the community to create thousands of modifications. (One is Counter-Strike.)

  • Half-Life 2 (2004) It became a qualitative leap: for the sake of it, the studio created a new Source engine from scratch, which then became the basis of many games for years to come. Source brought the industry new technologies of graphics, animation, physics, sound and storytelling, many of which are still in use today.
  • Half-Life and Half-Life 2 Together they not only set the standards of game design, but also changed the very approach to distribution of games. In parallel with HL2 in 2003 Valve launched Steam, initially to distribute updates for online games like Counter-Strike, and later to sell HL2 directly to players.
