For a week of leisurely reading, I studied the book by Emma Lewis. 2017 Years on how to understand photography. Emma is a British curator and photography historian who worked at the time of writing as an assistant curator of international art at the Tate Modern Gallery in London, where she deals with photographic acquisitions and curates exhibitions. Emma structured her book chronologically, highlighting five major periods of photography:

Part part 1: Invention of photography and documentation of the world (1826 — 1910) This part covers the earliest stages of the development of photography, from the invention of the photographic process to the early twentieth century. Part part 2: Towards Modernism (1850 — 1930) This period covers the early development of photography and includes the emergence of various trends. Within this era, special attention is paid to pictorialism, a movement that sought to prove that photography can be an art by imitating painting. Photographers such as Alfred Stiglitz and the Photo Secession group played a significant role in the development of pictorialism. Part part 3: Society and humanity (1930 — 1970) This era is famous for the development of street photography and documentary filming. The key figures were Eugène Atget, who created thousands of photographs of old Paris between 1890 and 1928 For years, as well as American photographers Walker Evans and Helen Levitt. Part part 4Postmodernism (1950 — 1990) This period included experiments with form and content, a departure from traditional ideas about photography. Part part 5: Modern photography (1980 — 2010) This was the era of digital photography and social media, including the period from the invention of the photographic process to the post-internet era.

If Emma were writing the book now, she would definitely be adding something about the current LMM rift. (large multimodal models)It allows you to generate any images and videos, but the book was almost written. 10 years ago, when the generated images were not so good.

In general, the book seemed to me a very accessible source of knowledge for everyone who wants to understand and feel the art that permeates our lives. The book itself is written in an accessible language without special jargon, but it contains reliable information.
