How AI-native development is changing the role of products
I got myself an interesting thought.
The product manager’s routine ends faster than many people notice. In AI-native development, a product ceases to be an interface between “business” and engineers. He needs to go into the data himself, assemble a prototype with the agent, formulate evals and acceptance criteria, understand the cost and risks.
As evidence, you can already see dismantled graduation Lenny's Podcast with Zevi Arnowitzproducts from the banned company Meta in Russia. Zevi has no technical background and admits that he can hardly read code. At the same time, he built around the models a small engineering organization with Claude, Gemini, Codex, Cursor and shipped the code to the product. He is responsible for what the user should feel from the feature, and the agents delegate the implementation.
It’s funny that now an engineer with a product mindset and AI can pick up some of the discovery, a designer can check the script, an analyst can build a prototype. And the product, whose strength rests on meetings, presentations and backlog, will suddenly find that the team knows how to do without it.
We need to change now: work with agents, understand code and data, learn evals and the economics of AI. The industry will not send an invitation to the calendar before rewriting our role. Better to rewrite yourself. - while there's still room for old-style products.
