How I write longreads on topics that are important to me (Category Writing)
I decided to share a recipe for how I now write important and difficult articles on technical topics. From the last article,IDP is Dead? No, the GUI monopoly is dying.andAgent-first IDP: how bigtechs and clouds prepare for agents».
For me, it usually starts with the fact that some issue becomes quite important in terms of work or internal project. Then it all comes to the need to deal with it and develop some plan or strategy to achieve the goal. I usually have experience + open questions + a rough plan of what to do, which I told people whose opinions and feedback are valuable to me. Next, I leave to do deep research, usually in three tools from Anthropic, OpenAI and Perplexity – usually I have a certain opinion + research questions + reference theses + articles that I throw as mandatory consideration. Next, I study the results, do fact-checking and read / see the cited sources.
- Usually the most interesting is born in those places where different services differ - this is an occasion to ask additional questions + ask for cross-review Next, I have in my head a plan of how to move in the right direction and then I usually write a thesis plan, which I give to the external service. Next, I review the document myself + several iterations of the review with different models
- Then I make visualizations of the right moments for the final article - I really like diagrams and visualization of the main points.
On the output, I usually get an md, pdf and html version of the article, which I finally run through the review and correct if necessary. Well, in the final is the publication of the article itself, and depending on the platform it can be both a simple process and complex. (For example, in the Medium engine there are no tables and other important elements, so you have to insert a lot of images.).
P.S. This process helps me understand the topic in just hours. 8 You can write an article that I would have written a week ago. But the main value is not just in the article, but in the integration of new knowledge into your picture of the world - before it required much more effort.
