Critical thinking. Iron logic for all occasions (Category Thinking)
This book by Nikita Nepryakhin and Taras Pashchenko is positioned as a practical guide for teenagers seeking to develop thinking skills. My wife bought it for the kids, and I decided to read and evaluate how children are taught to analyze information, distinguish facts from opinions, resist manipulation and make informed decisions. The presentation is very accessible, examples from everyday life are used. The book addresses the following topics: 1. Recognition of stereotypes and cognitive distortions. Examples from school life explain how social patterns affect the perception of reality. 2. Mechanisms of formation of superstitions and myths. The psychological reasons for believing in the irrational, including the confirmation effect and the propensity for simplified explanations, are examined. 3. The influence of public opinion on decision-making. Cases of conformity and group thinking relevant to the adolescent environment are analyzed. 4. Distinguish between facts and value judgments. Criteria for verifying information, such as verifying sources and finding evidence, are given. 5. The logical basis of argumentation. The structure of reasoning, types of arguments and common logical errors are discussed. 6. Decision-making practices. Algorithms of weighted choice in conditions of uncertainty are proposed, including risk and consequences analysis.
All these topics are dealt with within the framework of individual stories that are based on real situations: conflict with parents, choice of gift, choice of profession, magical thinking. This allows you not just to read the theory, but to try to apply it in practice. This is how authors work out important concepts.
Cognitive distortions – for example, halo effect, confirmation bias
The structure of argumentation - thesis, arguments, counterarguments
Criteria of reliability of information - verifiability, source, context.
The practical thrust of the book confirms that each chapter contains
- Cases for analysis. Readers are asked to rate situations similar to those they face in school or social media.
- Exercise exercise. For example, the task of classifying judgments ("fact vs opinion") Or building logical chains.
- Checklists and algorithms. Ready-made schemes for checking information, making decisions and reasoning.
This book is a good starting point for developing critical thinking for older readers. 12 years (return is indicated in the book). It is especially useful in an educational context – for logic lessons, electives or family reading. For an in-depth study of the topic, it is worth supplementing it with academic sources, but as a practical guide, it performs its task perfectly.
P.S. I've done it before. selection Books on Systems and Critical Thinking, many of which will be a good follow-up to this book:)
