Mentoring and the GROW model
Last week I had a short training in mentoring and the GROW model as a basic tool. It was interesting to hear about the differences between mentoring and coaching, about which I read John Whitmore’s classic book Coaching. ("Coaching for Performance")which I wrote about earlier. I needed mentoring training for two purposes:
- The graduates of our internal MBA with INSEAD received requests for mentoring from students at the second graduation, which is held jointly with Skolkovo.
- Within the company, we are launching architectural mentoring, which is aimed at helping to develop the ability to design and lead major technical changes.
As a result, we talked about the difference in expert mentoring and mentoring of managers, discussed the difference between coaching and mentoring, and also discussed the GROW model, which was invented by the aforementioned John Whitmore, one of the classics of coaching.
- Goal - at this stage, the goal is set
- Reality - here determines the current state and how far the menti is from the goal
- Options - here are discussed options for achieving the goal
- Will - here is the intention of what the police will do to achieve the goal In mentoring, there are usually several meetings, with each subsequent meeting beginning with an analysis of the results of what the menti has done since the previous meeting.
