I love reading Feynman’s books, and I especially liked this collection of autobiographical stories. Perhaps this is due to the name in which the rhetorical question is posed:) By the way, I bought it in visitation Phystech:)
As for the book itself, it consists of two large parts. 1. "Torture character" Warm and sometimes very personal stories about a man and a scientist: his father and his lessons in curiosity, first love and wife Arlene (It was her phrase that gave the book its title.)The joy of discovery, etc. In Russian-language publications, this part is indicated; at the end, Feynman’s speech “The Value of Science” is placed. 2. "Mr. Feynman Goes to Washington." Chronicle of work in the Rogers Commission to investigate the Challenger disaster (1986)From a street experiment with rubber O‑ring In a glass of ice before analyzing the culture of safety and integrity in reporting. The book also includes his famous Appendix F to the commission's report.
As for the main ideas of the book, they are 1. Independence of thought. This is the idea that you should not allow others’ expectations to replace your own thinking and values. (Arlene). 2. Reality is more important than status and PR. In the Challenger case, Feynman painfully reveals the gap between how things really work and how people talk about it. His final sentence from Appendix F became the motto of engineering honesty:
For technology to succeed, reality must prevail over PR, because nature cannot be fooled. 3. An honest risk assessment. Feynman compares engineering estimates of failure probability (order 1 toward 100) with "belief in perfection" in management (1 toward 100 000) It explains why such a gap is dangerous. This is about proper risk management. 4. Thinking with your hands. Simple visual experiments (Like a chilled O-ring) Sometimes it is more important than verbose meetings: the right experiment makes the problem obvious to everyone. What you see here is the link between engineering and management -- when it's lost, presentations and reports hide the reality from people in high offices:) 5. "The Value of Science". Science is not a catalog of truths, but a culture of doubt, verifiability, and intellectual honesty. This speech closes the book and summarizes Feynman's ethical core.
It seems that this book is more relevant than ever in the days of AI-hype and reducing criticality of thinking Those who trust AI tools too much, and believe in reliability and security, but don’t put it to the test:)
