I read this book by Yuri Adler and Vladimir Shper for several weeks. It is not that the book is boring, but rather that it is difficult to understand and requires an understanding of statistics and systems thinking. The authors promote the use of Shuhart’s control cards, which were popularized by Shuhart himself and his colleague Deming, who had a hand in the Japanese economic miracle. All this fits into the Schuhart-Deming PDCA cycle (plan - do - check - act). The book itself consists of eight chapters.

  1. What is Systemic, Statistical, and Visual Thinking, and Why?
  2. History of the emergence of statistical thinking. Basics of Variability Theory.
  3. Basics of Variability Theory (continuation). Analysis of process stability. Red Bead Game.
  4. Rules of construction and interpretation of CCS (shuharta). Classification of CCS types
  5. Construction and analysis of histograms. Tree and leaves diagrams (stem-and-leaf) and box-and-mustache (box-and-whisker). Probabilistic grids and distribution laws
  6. Process reproducibility indices (CPI)
  7. Problems and difficulties in the construction and use of CCS and histograms in practice. Algorithm of stability and reproducibility analysis
  8. SPC, AI, Big Data and New Ideas in QCS

If crtaco, then the book is devoted to how to analyze the variability of processes. How to assess the causes of variability, where the authors say Common causes of variability inherent in the process

  • special (assignable) causes of variability that arise due to external influences in relation to the process Special causes require local intervention, and common causes of variation require intervention. (This should usually be done by senior management.). This book is about statistical thinking.

It is a philosophy of learning and action based on the following fundamental principles: Any work is carried out in a system of interrelated processes There are variations in all processes Understanding and reducing variation is key to success The definition of operational definitions is given, which are understandable and for which a practical way of their unambiguous implementation is indicated. The Schuhart control map is then given as the operational definition of a statistically controlled or stable process. But to build these maps, you need to answer a number of practical questions.

  1. How to choose indicators that require change?
  2. How many such indicators should be measured?
  3. What method should be used to measure each selected indicator?
  4. How often should each indicator be measured?
  5. With what accuracy should each indicator be measured?
  6. Who should analyze each indicator? Each one of the questions hides a lot of interesting things, but I would like to note the answer to this question. 6 The authors say that the indicators should be analyzed by the owners of the processes themselves, since they know the essential component of the process and its features.

In general, there is still a lot of interesting things in the book and I think it is useful for managers in both real and digital production.
