Research Insights #33 materials: SWE-agent (#AI4SDLC)

I have gathered the materials for the solo Research Insights Made Simple episode from October 5, 2026: “SWE-agent: the interface changes the result.” I explored how the same language model solves tasks differently when its tools and the environment’s responses change.

An editor, search, and line numbers help an engineer. An agent has a workspace too, built from commands and textual responses. If it is unclear what changed after an edit, the next move goes into establishing the file’s state. In the [SWE-agent paper](https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.15793) from NeurIPS 2024, the authors investigate how such details affect the ability to turn a fix into a working patch.

In the episode I covered: 🔸 How an agent navigates an unfamiliar project File search, matching text, and viewing code with line numbers—and why traversing results in a way that is convenient for a person can lead a model into a useless search. 🔸 What to return after an edit The edit command immediately displays the updated fragment. If a check rejects the change, the agent receives the error and both versions of the code. But the restriction has a cost: it can prevent a necessary intermediate state. 🔸 What to retain in context The viewing window and old tool responses: after several edits, the history already contains file versions that no longer exist. 🔸 How to read the experimental results Full SWE-bench and Lite, runs with and without a demonstration, and the contribution of individual components. Several independent attempts and continuing a stalled dialogue are different experiments. 🔸 Why an agent’s design needs revisiting The final section covers SWE-smith, mini-SWE-agent’s return to bash, and changes to SWE-bench Verified.

The percentages and settings in the paper describe experiments from 2024. With modern models, both the benefits of a specialized command and the cost of its restrictions need testing again.
