Research Insights №38: What a Harness Contributes — Materials (#AI4SDLC)

Materials are ready for solo Research Insights Made Simple episode №38 from October 13, 2026, “Designing Harnesses for Coding Agents: What the Harness Contributes.” I examined the September 2026 study “An Empirical Study of Harness Design for Coding Agents, v1” on planning, tools, and context management. The useful question here is practical: which specific failure does the next component of our agent address?

In the episode, I covered:

🔸 Separating the model from the harness The authors keep the overall working loop and vary individual components: four models, two task sets, and 176 configurations. This is not an exhaustive test of every combination.

🔸 What context management contributes In the study, most of the benefit comes from preventing context window overflow. Evicting old results before summarizing reduces the estimated cost; models rarely use the option to retrieve those results from memory.

🔸 Why a strong model needs a plan A plan can reduce redundant checks after a change, while helping a weaker model avoid abandoning the task too early. Fewer turns do not by themselves imply a better result.

🔸 Why you cannot simply leave bash The effect depends on the model and the task. Removing dedicated tools also removes the built-in diagnostics after editing, so several working conditions change at once.

🔸 What to look for in the sequence of actions Context overflow, early abandonment, and endless rechecking require different interventions. The final score does not tell you where the agent got stuck.

An important caveat: one attempt per task and a limited set of models cannot yield a universal recipe. What is worth taking from the episode is a way to design an experiment and repeat it after changing the model.
