Research Insights #41 materials: anatomy of an agent—seven harness responsibilities (#AI4SDLC)
The materials for solo Research Insights Made Simple #41 from October 20, 2026 are available. I explored the source-code study of eleven systems “Harness Engineering: Anatomy, Architecture, and Evolution of Coding Agents - A Source-Code Study of Eleven Systems”: a short model-calling loop can already do useful work, but an entire product quickly grows around it.
In the episode I covered:
🔸 Seven responsibilities of the harness The execution loop, model integration, tools, context, security, coordination, and extensions. This map helps compare architectures and locate exactly where complexity is hidden.
🔸 Why a shared API is not enough Edit formats, caching, and instructions differ between models. Compatibility requires continuous work; a large tool catalog also creates the challenge of finding tools and loading them into context.
🔸 What exactly we roll back Returning to an earlier message does not necessarily restore files to their earlier state. Session history, the working copy, and long-term memory solve different problems and require different recovery rules.
🔸 How to separate permission from isolation User consent to an action does not by itself determine which files and network resources the process can access. Adding subagents introduces questions about passing history, tools, and results between them.
🔸 How to test appealing architectural ideas MCP, skills, and hooks offer different ways to extend a system. A small sample of systems does not establish a winner, and reading source code does not measure task-solving quality. I suggest treating the atlas as a source of hypotheses to test in your own work.
A useful episode if you want to see concrete mechanisms behind the word “agent.” Individual products’ capabilities change quickly; the discussion concerns the version snapshot selected by the study’s authors.

Which part of the harness is causing you the most trouble now: context, tools, recovery, or permissions?
