The working formula is wider than the usual pair “model + tie”: Agent stack = binding + model + tools + identity + technical boundaries of execution.
The binding controls the work cycle and the context, the model offers a plan, the tools create a real effect. Identity, sandbox, and policy engine determine on whose behalf and within what boundaries an agent acts.
Let’s talk about eight configurations: from standalone stack and local model to external planner, enterprise tool gateway and full SaaS. Each scheme has its own price of control, speed, lock-in and operation.
We will discuss several non-obvious consequences:
- open source ≠ local inference; Self-hosted е Safe activities; Employee access а Agent access Internal MCP – narrow powers; External API е External right of action; Multi-model router = separate platform.
The key idea is to divide the two paths. The model gateway controls which data goes to which model. The instrumental gateway decides who can change what and on whose behalf. Between them you need a single identity, policy, trace and evals.
And here the conversation turns to safety. The attack is not an abstract model, but a path from an untrusted README, issue or tool result to an action with real powers. Therefore, restrictions should be provided by the infrastructure, not the system pump.
In general, we’ll discuss not “which agent is better,” but what minimum configuration to choose for a pilot, enterprise platform, or adjustable circuit—and who is responsible for actually changing the system.
