Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2026The survey itself has become a map of agent development (Category AI4SDLC)
Half an hour ago I filled a new one. Big Stack Overflow (It's off. 23 June 2026 year and is still available for). I went there not so much for the usual set of “languages, bases, IDE”, but out of curiosity: what Stack Overflow this year asks about AI. And there's a shift that's clearly visible -- it's no longer about chat rooms or auto-additions, but an attempt to measure how AI and agents enter the production system. (It was similar in a recent pulse survey from StackOverflow that I handler).
If we talk about the survey itself, now his questions can be found in the repos (It's super cool.). And if you look at it, AI no longer looks like a separate section at the end of the questionnaire. And even a dedicated block. AI + AI Agents It is present, but the AI issues themselves have spread in technology, community, and knowledge/context. Stack Overflow asks not just about tools, but about trust, context, attribution, cost, memory, control, observability, and the tasks people actually delegate to agents.
If you try to describe the diffs in more detail and on points, it will come out like this.
1Moving from one monolithic “AI adoption” to different types of AI at work Question `AISelect` Separately breeds coding assistants and coding agents, general purpose chats, AI agents for automating workflows and internal AI tools of the company. Then comes the frequency of use, the share of the working day, the number of different AI tools per week and the reasons for switching between them. For AI4SDLC, this is an important division: a chat next to a person, an agent coding in an IDE and an internal enterprise tool have different access rights, risks and ways to verify the result.
2Shift towards agent development Question `AIWork` lays out workflow according to scenarios: architectural research, code generation in a familiar and unfamiliar area, onboarding into a codebase, debag / refactoring, tests, revision, security, documentation, internal knowledge base, log and metric analysis, ticket / plan, dev / test environment and sales system. For each scenario, not only the current use is asked, but the expectation for next year.
There's more nearby. specificity from the knowledge/context block: what are the most recent tasks 30 During the day, you delegated AI to tools or agents with a list of options: code, debag, code review, tests, documentation, architectural solutions, planning, changing systems sales, deployment, monitoring, incident investigation, security/privacy/compliance, data analytics, and coordination between teams. It seems that here the guys are trying to assess where people are ready to let an agent work:)
3Tools are already treated as stack
- Separately asked about coding agents and / or assistants: Claude Code, Cursor, OpenAI Codex, GitHub Copilot, Devin, Jules, Warp, Cline, Aider and a long tail of new players No-code agent builders, automation, orchestration/frameworks, memory/vector databases and observability/evals tooling: LangGraph, OpenAI Agents SDK, LangSmith, Langfuse, Braintrust, Promptfoo, DeepEval, Ragas and others. In 2026 Stack Overflow is already asking to gauge the popularity of tools in every part of this AI stack.
4Trust is formulated through verifiability
B `AITrust есть не просто "trust / don't trust", а градации: доверяю только low-risk задачам; доверяю, когда могу легко проверить результат; доверяю многим задачам, но не важным work decisions. А в AIWorkNext` Ask what a person does before using an AI-generated answer: launches locally, reads official docs, searches for Stack Overflow, asks a colleague, checks tests/security implications, compares to the codebase context, or uses as is.
5It is time for economics and governance B `AIAdopt` Ask what is important when selecting or extending an AI tool/model: accuracy, getting into workflow, security/privacy, compliance, price relative to value, monitoring/expense limits, the ability to change the tool/model without much pain, evidence of business results, built-in observation, review load, human supervision and so on. The question is whether an organization can make AI operationally manageable.
6There is a separate layer about Stack Overflow as a product and community. B `SOChange` Ask how AI has changed the use of Stack Overflow: Are people less likely to go for simple questions, more likely to go for verification/source attribution, ask fewer questions, ask more complex questions, and pay less or more. If simple answers have gone into chat, the value of public Q&A shifts to verifiability, sources, people’s experiences, and complex cases where the AI response needs to be grounded.
Overall, this survey shows what kind of reality map Stack Overflow is trying to build. 2026 year. And this map has shifted from "AI as an editorial assistant" to "AI as an agential development operating model."
