The Future of U.S. AI Leadership with CEO of Anthropic Dario Amodei (AI column)
11 March 2025 year conversation Executive Speaker Series of the Council on Foreign Relations n (CFR)Council President Michael Foreman interviewed Anthropic CEO and co-founder Dario Amodei. It was at this meeting that Dario made his prediction that 90Percent of code in six months will write AI, and in a year and all 100%. In the end, I decided to watch the whole meeting and highlight the highlights that I found interesting.
1) Founding and mission of Anthropic Dario Amodei reveals reasons for leaving OpenAI at end 2020 The year and the creation of Anthropic. He explained that his team was one of the first to recognize the “scaling hypothesis” – the principle that AI gets better as computing power and data increase. Anthropic was created as a mission-oriented company with an emphasis on the safety and predictability of AI technologies. Here, Dario explicitly hinted that OpenAI had other plans to develop these technologies. 2) Security and responsible development of AI Amodej detailed Anthropic's approaches to security, including: Mechanistic interpretability for understanding AI behavior Constitutional AI Learned Based on Principles Responsible scaling policy AI security levels comparable to biosecurity levels 3) The future of programming That's the hottest topic I went to see this talk for. Amodeus made a prediction that during the 3-6 For months, AI can write. 90% of the total code. The role of programmers will change, but will remain important for defining requirements, designing applications and making critical decisions. 4) Geopolitics and National Security Amodei stressed the importance of export controls on AI technologies and discussed the risks posed by China’s possible dominance in the field. The phrase was that whoever gains dominance in this technology will gain military and economic supremacy in everything else. Smuggling of GPUs and cooperation with national security institutions were also discussed. 5) Social Implications of AI Development The conversation touched upon the impact of AI on the labor market, society and human values. Amodeus presented both optimistic and pessimistic scenarios of the future, where AI could either help humans create great things or lead to the devaluation of human labor. I am currently reading the book Feeding the Machine. ("How to feed a car")This is where these topics are very interesting. 6) Prospects for AI development Amodei discussed possible limits to AI growth, including potential data depletion 2030 He noted that new learning methods such as “reasoning models” could eliminate this problem by allowing AI to learn from its own thoughts.
The conversation ended with a reflection that, despite all the technological advances, human qualities and relationships will remain important, and AI can help but not replace fundamental human values.
