The Halo Effect: And the Eight Other Business Delusions That Deceive Managers (The halo effect and other misconceptions of every manager.)

I recently read this excellent book, which is rapidly approaching maturity, since the first edition has already passed. 16 years:) In this book, Phil Rosenzweig, a business scientist, literally dissects the pseudo-scientific nonsense that is usually presented in the pages of business literature.

  • "From good to great." Why some companies make a breakthrough and others don’t ("Good to Great. Why Some Companies Make the Leap...and Others Don't")
  • "Builded forever." Success of companies with vision” ("Built to Last. Successful Habits of Visionary Companies")

Phil’s main point is that all these books are based on the analysis of companies that are selected from their previous results, for analysis, employees’ memories of those times and articles in the press are used. But all this is subject to the halo effect, which prevents you from getting really scientific research and turns everything into writing interesting and inspiring stories. And these inspiring stories sell well, as everyone wants to get involved in the miraculous method or approach described by the authors of business literature. So it turns into a cargo cult:)
