I read the book The Human Cloud from that time. (21 year)When it was Sber Cloud, not Cloud.ru, and their name flaunts on the cover - because the guys helped in the publication of this book. If we talk about the book, the main theme is the future transformation of the world of work under the influence of three factors: Development of remote work technologies Explosive growth of the freelance economy (gig economy) Introduction of automation / artificial intelligence (And that was before the chatgpt.) The authors introduce the concept of “Human Cloud” (human cloud)A global pool of freelance talent available through digital platforms on the principle of cloud service. According to Mottola and Coatney, the traditional office model is outdated: modern means of communication. (mail, video, cloud storage, task managers) They can work effectively from anywhere in the world. Companies are increasingly choosing to hire specialists for specific projects, rather than keep staff, so full-time employment in one office is no longer the norm. Interestingly, now removal is no longer in fashion, freelancing becomes forced due to cuts, and AI no longer just automates routine operations. (How much has changed 5 years since the writing of the book).

But in their book, the authors are optimistic - they say these three factors offer new opportunities for both workers and employers. They list a number of key ideas and advice:

Remote freelancing model increases efficiency Individual contractors are now able to carry out projects that previously required the resources of a large corporation. Thanks to cloud-based tools, one talented specialist can reach global customers and work with them directly, without intermediaries. For professionals, this means more influence and freedom. Full employment is no longer a guarantee of stability. Paradoxically, the authors note that many during the pandemic became convinced that a permanent position is not as reliable as it was thought. Freelancing can give a stable income if a person has demanded skills. Technology makes the transition to independent work easier – from online customer search platforms to affordable development tools, design, analytics, etc. The main thing is the result, not the process In the new model, success is determined not by hours and office policy, but by concrete results. (outcomes). A freelancer is valued for the completed project and quality of work, so should focus on their best professional skills. This focus on the result, according to the authors, will make the company more efficient. Human Cloud + AI = The Future of Work In addition to the human cloud of freelancers, the authors introduce the concept of “Machine Cloud” – conventionally, a cloud of machine intelligence. Automation and AI complement human labor by taking on routine or time-consuming tasks. The book emphasizes that while there are fears that “robots will take jobs,” the reality is not so grim. New technologies create new opportunities rather than total unemployment. Mottola and Coatney urge not to be afraid, but to use AI tools to increase productivity and value in the labor market.

The main message of the book is optimistic, but if you look at the gig economy today, you can see that it actually faced serious problems: social insecurity of workers, lack of stability in work, regulatory restrictions. (When gig workers are equated to full-time employees under certain conditions). Such trends call into question the unlimited growth of the human cloud as described in the book. Companies will no longer be able to save indefinitely by circumventing labor laws – they may have to find a balance between flexibility and social security.
