Joost Keizer tells the story of Leonardo from Vinci, who was born illegitimate, which prevented him from following his father’s path and becoming a notary. Instead, he went to art and succeeded:) True, this road turned out to be a path of wandering, which he began in the creative whirlpool of Florence, then moved around the city-states, and ended up in retirement as a genius at the court of the King of France. We know Leonardo mainly for his paintings, but he spent a lot of time away from the Malbert and was a truly versatile person who was interested in natural sciences, engineering, sculpture, poetry, music and even anatomy. (which then played against him.). All this he combined with his forced travels - in fact, he was a digital nomad of the past:) Leonardo’s personal world was both vibrant and active. Sometimes it interacted, and sometimes it did not, with the wider world. But what came out of it established Leonardo as the definition of a Renaissance man.

In general, the book is interesting and beautiful enough to be a pleasure to read, even if you have read a couple of other books about it.
