Unravel Two (Games rubric)
We recently played a game together.Unravel TwoWith Cyril, my son. 5 It turned out to be a very good example of a game that you can actually play with a young child rather than just formally include a co-op:)
From the outside, the toy looks like just a beautiful platformer about two Yarny - small creatures made of threads. But her main idea is just a bunch of two characters. They are connected by one thread, and almost the whole game is built on this: you need to cling to the environment, rock, pull each other up, make bridges from the thread, cross obstacles together and solve simple puzzles. Due to this, the cooperative here is not screwed on top, but built into the mechanics itself. You literally move forward just because you're not alone.
I especially liked the way the narrative is arranged here. The game doesn’t explain much in words, but it does convey a sense of connection, support, and a shared path. This story is not about plot twists and long dialogues, but about the state: there is someone nearby, you stick together, and therefore you can move on. For play with a child, this works especially well because it doesn’t take long to explain context – it’s read through action, light, movement and the situations themselves.
Another strength is the environment. Unravel Two plays very well on the contrast of scale. You see the forest, the water, the grass, the branches, the old houses, some living spaces, but all this is shown from the point of view of a very small creature. Because of this, the ordinary world becomes both cozy and a little dangerous. The game is beautiful, warm in colors and atmosphere, but not sweet: it has a sense of adventure, and slight anxiety, and a sense of the big world around.
And most importantly, why is she really suitable for co-op with children? It doesn’t have the highest entry threshold, it doesn’t require a lightning-fast response every second, and it doesn’t rely on constant punishment for mistakes. A more experienced player can hedge, take on more complex pieces, and the child still remains a full-fledged participant in the process, not a spectator with a connected gamepad. In fact, Cyril was woven into my Yarni in particularly difficult places and I could go through these episodes with him on my shoulders. In general, Kirill and I liked it very much, but we did not go through particularly difficult additional levels:)
