The greatest mathematical problems (The Great Mathematical Problems)
This excellent book by Ian Stewart once reminded me of why I have always loved mathematics... which is usually taught in school in a boring and utilitarian way, but behind the scenes is full of beautiful riddles and charming patterns:) In general, I recommend this book for reading, as the author has tried and in simple and clear language outlined a number of problems that have been fought over by generations of scientists and that moved mathematics forward, creating new areas of research. In this book you will read about: Famous problems of quadrature of circle, three bodies, equivalence of classes P and NP Four Color Theorems, Fermat's Great Theorem
- hypotheses of Kepler, Riemann, Poincaré
- and more.
But the point is not to disentangle these problems, but to understand how mathematics evolves over time and how its various fields are related to each other by paradoxical regularities, and how mathematics is completely connected with the rest of the sciences.
P.S. It's so nice to read a book that requires a lot of brainpower to read, and that's what this book is:)
