AI Hires AI. How Do We Redesign Tech Interviews?

What we discussed on the recording

The co-hosts first reconstruct the old hiring logic: behavioural rounds, coding, system design, and a decomposed Big Tech funnel reduced the risk of a false positive. That system gradually became a separate test-preparation discipline, while online AI can now write code, suggest answers, and help a candidate imitate cultural fit. A language quiz or rehearsed problem increasingly fails to show how someone will work with agents and deliver an outcome.

Their redesign starts by treating hiring as an evaluation system, not by banning AI. An AI-off stage reveals engineering fundamentals and independent judgement; an AI-on stage shows how a candidate frames the problem, chooses a workflow, assembles context, verifies the answer, and carries it into operation. A sandbox can combine system design with deployment, load, troubleshooting, and even disagreement with the interviewer, although calibrated graders and valid unconventional solutions remain hard to scale.

AI already operates on both sides of the funnel: candidates research companies and tailor résumés while recruiting systems rank applications. The co-hosts separate matching from commitment: an agent can narrow the field, but people still need to test culture, trust, and the offer itself. The shared profile combines engineering fundamentals with fluent AI use; product, platform, and R&D roles differ in domain breadth, tolerance for uncertainty, and the cost of trade-offs. Both extremes fail—an expert who rejects AI and an AI-native practitioner without fundamentals.

The market is producing fewer openings and backfills while smaller teams take on more responsibility and the boundary between managers and individual contributors blurs. Value moves from narrow stack expertise toward autonomy, domain knowledge, problem discovery, and ownership of the outcome. Job hunting therefore becomes a multi-month project: state your principles, research companies, build a personal funnel, tailor the résumé, and enter through trusted networks. Internal mobility can be a lower-risk version of the same career strategy, while agents help close skill gaps and test ideas with working prototypes.
