[2/2] Neural Networks Took Over Social Media: How a Kazakhstani Startup Rode AI Trends to Become a Unicorn (Category AI)

Continuing the interview review, I will look at how the team grows its audience so quickly and how it works with video-generation models.

3️⃣ The prosumer model: B2B SaaS 2.0

“Prosumer” combines professional and consumer, and that is the company’s audience:

  • 60% of Higgsfield users are professionals, including graphic designers, social media managers, and camera operators.
  • They use it for work but buy it themselves, without enterprise contracts.

Why it matters:

  • Individuals adopt tools faster than enterprises.
  • Prosumers become advocates, spreading the product through word of mouth.
  • Similar examples include Cursor for developers, Gamma for presentations, and Lovable for vibe coding.

The business model:

  • $9 a month for casual use and $100 a month for professionals.
  • Subscriptions plus tokens, as with LLM services.

4️⃣ Organic growth without performance marketing

“60% of traffic is organic. People hear about us somewhere and type ‘Higgsfield’ into search.” More specifically, the channels include:

  • Viral trends on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.
  • A network of influencers and creators posting tutorials.
  • Leading European football clubs and celebrities.

Why venture investors like it:

  • Less spending on advertising makes the business more defensible.
  • Organic word of mouth provides evidence of product-market fit.

5️⃣ A gateway to models: competing with Google and Meta

Higgsfield’s strategy:

  • Use Google’s Veo3, the Chinese model Kling, and other models through APIs.
  • Develop models of its own, including Soul, described as “the most aesthetic image generation.”
  • Package them for prosumers with click-to-video, templates, and camera controls.

The result, as described in the interview:

  • Google, Kling, and others compete to release their models on Higgsfield first.
  • Control of distribution gives Higgsfield bargaining power with the giants.

The lesson:

  • In AI, distribution can matter more than technology.
  • Strong distribution channels give foundation-model providers a reason to work with you.

My takeaways for product builders

  1. Speed wins in AI. If your iteration cycle exceeds 2–4 weeks, you risk falling behind.
  2. Do not reinvent the wheel. Use foundation models through APIs and add value through the user experience and workflow.
  3. Prosumers can be a better starting point than enterprises. Individuals adopt faster and become advocates.
  4. GitHub is your second résumé, especially if you are a junior or do not have a computer science degree.
  5. Creativity plus engineering creates differentiation. Hire domain experts as well as ML engineers.
