[2/3] Developer productivity (Category Productivity)
Continuing the theme of developer productivity, raised in first paragraphI wanted to think about how this issue is approached around the world.
"Accelerate" and DORA metrics
- Book came out 2018 It was written by Forsgren, Humble and Kim. The entire content of the book is based on surveys of engineers aka Devops Reports, which were collected for about five years. 2012 year DORA metrics consist of two categories: Rate of delivery: deployment frequency and lead time for changes Change Failure Rate and Time to Restore Service It’s a fundamental story that I would like to know. And I have a short sammari book in three parts: 1, 2 and 3
Whitepaper: The SPACE of Developer Productivity
- Scientific article came out in March 2021 Written by Forsgren, Storey Zimmermann, Houck, Butle There are five categories of metrics in this framework that are combined into the acronym SPACE (Satisfaction and well-being, Performance, Activity, Communication and collaboration, Efficiency and flow)Each of which is divided into 3 level (individual, team, e2e) Interesting that we already have a combination of metrics from surveys. (satisfaction & well being) and a process metric. Potentially, you can get a pretty complete picture, but you need to work very carefully with the data and its interpretation.

DevEx: What Actually Drives Productivity
- Scientific article came out in May 2023 It was written by Noda, Storey, Forsgren, Greiler. There are three categories in this framework: feedback loops, cognitive load, flow state. Each category is divided into three parts: perceptions, workflows. (system & process behaviors) and KPIs (north star metrics) The authors note that part about perceptions can be pulled only from surveys, but workflows must be pulled from the systems themselves. And then they move into the survey design part. Two of the co-authors of this whitepaper represent the DX platform (getdx.com)whose instrument devex360 even hitch in techradar from ThoughtWorks in September 2023 This platform is based on surveys.

Development of the DevEx framework (DevEx in Action)
- Scientific article came out in January 2024 Written by Forsgren, Kalliamvakou, Noda, Greiler, Houck, Storey DevEx: What Actually Drives Productivity
- The same categories. This article provides a statistical analysis of survey results on getdx.com, which is used by different companies to conduct surveys on developer exp. (Examples of companies: Etsy, Dropbox, Ebay, Amplitude, Monzo, P&G, DHL, ...) The goal is to find out how each of the three categories affects the outcomes of three levels: individual, team, organization. The goal has been achieved and the impact has been demonstrated and it is very useful for the sales of the platform:)

And last part of the article I will talk about the platforms in the market and what we have in Tinkoff:)
