🌐 Open source in the AI era: growth and new leaders

  • Activity in public repositories reached record highs. In 2025, public and open-source projects received 1.128 billion contributions, up 13% year over year. GitHub had 395 million public repositories, up 20%, and the community merged 518.7 million pull requests in public projects during the year, up 29%.
  • The AI boom helped drive this growth: 6 of the 10 fastest-growing projects were AI infrastructure tools, such as frameworks for running or orchestrating models. Examples include vllm, ollama, ComfyUI, and Continue.
  • AI also accounted for 60% of the top 10 repositories by contributor count. Contributors invested in core AI libraries and engines such as HuggingFace Transformers and llama.cpp, as well as AI features in popular tools, including OpenAI Codex for VS Code.
  • Open source remains broader than AI. Alongside growing AI projects, established areas remain strong: the Godot game engine, Home Assistant home-IoT platform, and Expo mobile framework consistently rank among the leaders by contributor count.
  • Developers also show growing interest in efficiency tools: deterministic builds and dependency management with Nix and UV to make code work on any machine; high-performance tools such as Tailwind CSS and Ghostty for quick results; and projects giving users greater control over their environment, such as the secure Zen Browser.
  • Decentralized social networks continue to gain ground: Bluesky’s success points to demand for open protocols and independence.

🚀 AI increases development productivity The report describes a jump in productivity during 2025: developers did more, faster, across key metrics, partly thanks to new AI tools. GitHub’s monthly figures now include:

  • About 4.25 million issues closed, versus roughly 3.4 million in 2024.
  • Some 43.2 million pull requests merged, versus around 35 million in 2024.
  • Commits increasing from about 65 million to 82 million a month. These figures rose sharply in spring 2025 after the Copilot coding-agent preview in March and Copilot Code Review’s release in April. Developers closed 1.4 million more issues in March than in February; July 2025 set a monthly record of 5.5 million. In interviews, 72.6% of Copilot Code Review users said its AI recommendations improved their code-review process. Overall activity growth of 25–30% year over year across different signals suggests that AI tools help teams complete tasks faster and reduce collaboration friction, as well as save coding time.
