Big book of analogies (Big Book Of Science. Facts, Figures, and Theories to Blow Your Mind)
I read this cool book by Joel Levy a couple of years ago, which contains beautiful and interesting analogies from seven areas. Each example is placed on just a couple of pages and perfectly illustrated - the concept of the phenomenon is clearly shown literally on your fingers and the scale is demonstrated, because people do not perceive differences in several orders of magnitude, when a few more than two.
Seven fields from which examples for analogies are taken are physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, earth science, the human body and technology. Here are just a few of the topics covered in the first quarter of the book: Kepler’s laws, the twin paradox, general relativity, the scale of fundamental interactions, Schrödinger’s cat, Brownian motion, dynamic equilibrium in chemical reactions:)
And some examples from the book to understand the essence of the examples. If you increase the atom to the size of a cathedral, its nucleus will be no larger than a bee buzzing in the center, and electrons will rotate around the outer perimeter of the building. The cell is like a microscopic city: it has its own power plants. (mitochondria)factories (ribosomes)garbage trucks (secretory) and even the city wall. (cell-wall). Environmental conditions are constantly changing. To survive, a person must maintain a constant body temperature and other parameters of the internal environment. It's like climbing an escalator going down. Our universe is expanding, and the galaxies in it are moving away from each other faster the greater the distance between them. This is similar to how the highlights in the bun that is baked in the oven are removed from each other.
In general, the book can be given to a teenager or read to younger children:)
