Dominika Rogala on burnout: AI speeds up work — and raises the expected workload (Rubric #Management)
A post about AI burnout explored the limits of human attention. Dominika Rogala adds an organizational layer: AI can make a task cheaper while overloading the work system. The tools got faster — and so did expectations. Rogala is the founder and a leadership coach at Good Job Coffee, a former VP of Engineering at NeuroDevice, and a former Engineering Manager at Vector Technologies and Intel. Her framing is an engineering one: look for the problem not only in the person, but also in the system of priorities, decisions, and recovery.
The talk opens by the ocean in Nazaré. Rogala is a trained lifeguard and a strong swimmer, yet a large wave still knocked her down. By the time you can clearly see a wave, you are often already inside it. Burnout works the same way: it is better to notice the early signals. Rogala maps them across four dimensions. The first three draw on the classic burnout framework; the fourth is her practical extension.
🔸 Exhaustion — energy no longer recovers quickly enough, making even small decisions expensive. 🔸 Emotional distance — you keep working but pull away from what used to matter; “it works — good enough” replaces care about quality. 🔸 Reduced sense of efficacy — you are constantly busy yet still feel behind and less capable than before. 🔸 Identity gap — who you are at work increasingly differs from the engineer or leader you wanted to become. Sometimes the hardest part is not fatigue itself, but no longer recognizing yourself in your own work.
Rogala then uses the Job Demands–Resources model — Demands — workload, context switching, constant availability, and adaptation — Resources — autonomy, clarity, support, meaning, and time for learning and recovery — Risk grows when high demands become the norm while resources remain chronically insufficient.
AI appears in both columns. It reduces the effort required for a task, but a person remains accountable for the result, verifies it, and makes the decisions. At the same time, speed, the number of contexts, and expectations all rise. Rogala’s central point is that the system does not necessarily become simpler — it becomes faster. Efficiency gains quickly turn into expectation inflation.
This is where the talk connects with a post by Paweł Soluch, founder of NeuroDevice and current CEO and co-founder of Spinally. Rogala later served as VP of Engineering at NeuroDevice. Early in his career, Soluch could work for two days without sleep and constantly cross time zones. Everything looked fine for years; then he gained 30 kg, his body forced him to stop, and recovery took months. His formula is simple: you can negotiate with investors, but not with biology; recovery is part of a company’s foundation.
Rogala replied under the post that this infrastructure has to be built into every day. Small, regular pauses preserve energy better than waiting for the “right moment,” after which a week off may no longer be enough. This is not a diagnosis from the outside, but two levels of the same story: Rogala offers a model of imbalance, while Soluch gives a personal account of the price he paid for ignoring it for years.
The practical conclusion is not wellness perks — If status meetings consume half the week, the answer is fewer meetings, not a time-management lecture — If everything is a priority, remove two priorities — Three more ideas: restore 1:1 meetings, protect deep work, and give the team a buffer week in which people choose their own work. — AI training becomes a resource only when people have working time to apply it.
What matters to me here is the idea that AI does not automatically create energy debt. But if every hour saved is immediately filled with another task, we do not get a sustainable system — only a faster route down the same rabbit hole.
