How Not to Write a Novel (How to write a book so that it is not published)
The book by Howard Mittelmark and Sandra Newman is intended for authors who, at all costs, seek to avoid publishing their books and further financial success. The book itself reminded me of Gregory Oster’s Harmful Advice, which he wrote for naughty children who do the opposite. In fact, in this book, Howard and Sandra went from the opposite – they did not describe how to write a quality book, but on the contrary shared tips on how to write a book that publishers will award only a garbage can. The book itself consists of 7 Parts filled with sparkling humor and selected examples that the authors themselves wrote to demonstrate the effectiveness of their advice. They start with the main thing, namely the plot, and begin to move on to the important components of a good novel, turning it into mediocrity:) Here is a list of these steps.
- Plot: introduction and set-up, development of events, ending
- Hero: the essence of the characters, acquaintance with the hero, secondary characters, bad guys
- Style: words and phrases, sentences and paragraphs, dialogue
- Style: type of narrative, internal monologue
- Art world: scenery, matchmaking and historical context, the main idea
- Special effects and innovation: bed scenes, humor, postmodernism
- How not to sell a novel: cover letter, synopsis, submission of material
