The history of robotics: not one line, but several engineering shifts (Category Robotics)
Continue. story I want to talk about why robotics is interesting now, I want to take a step back. The current wave of AI, humanoid robots, simulators and fundamental models looks new, but it stands on the shoulders of giants who have made history before. The story didn’t look like one straight line—it’s more useful to look at it as a series of steps that gradually evolved together: mechanical action, programmability, world perception, and autonomous behavior.
1ы Automatons Long before the word “robot”, engineers built mechanisms that, after launch, performed a sequence of actions. Heron of Alexandria He described devices that operated from water, steam and cargo. Al-Jazari In the XIII century he recorded complex mechanical devices in drawings and descriptions. Eighteenth century Jacques de Vaucanson He showed machines as a public demonstration of engineering precision. It’s not robotics in the modern sense, but here comes an important idea: behavior can be “recorded” in machine design.
2ль Culture In 1920 The year Karel Capek publishes R.U.R.The word “robot” is used in popular culture. This is an important turn: the robot becomes not just a mechanism, but a figure through which society discusses labor, control, responsibility and artificial life. Later, Isaac Asimov cements the word robotics And he formulates his own laws of robotics. The discipline of engineering in the strict sense is not there yet, but there is a language in which people start talking about autonomous machines.
3Industry In 1961 Unimate is installed on the General Motors line. Here, the robot ceases to be an image from a play or an exhibition machine and becomes a production asset. What is important is not human-likeness or effectivity, but repeatability, programmability and the ability to work where it is difficult or dangerous for a person. George Devol and Joseph Engelberger translated the idea from “can be imagined” to “can be implemented”.
4Mobility and AI If an industrial robot is most often in a controlled environment, then a mobile robot needs to understand space and make decisions. Here comes W. Grey Walter with Cybernetic Turtlesand then Shakey The Robot in SRI. Shakey was not about speed or practical readiness, but about an architectural idea: perception, planning and action could be put together in one system. This is very similar to the question we are asking again today: how do we connect the model of the world with physical action?
5Exit from the laboratory and factory Sojourner It shows the value of robots for Mars exploration. da Vinci makes robot-assisted surgery a prominent medical category. ASIMO It turns humanoid robotics into a public symbol. Roomba It shows that a home robot can become a mass product if the task is narrow enough. FIRST and RoboCup Add another track: robotics as an educational and research culture.
6Open-source stack and new AI wave ROSSimulators, cheap sensors, GPUs and modern models are changing the pace of development. The robot becomes not a separate iron device, but a system of mechanics, electronics, perception, planning, control, data, simulation and software. That is why the current wave is interesting: it did not originate from scratch, but tries to connect what has been developing for decades in separate lines.
In summary, the history of robotics is the story of how a machine gradually learned to operate in the world: first mechanically, then programmably, then with perception, and now with an attempt to understand task and context.
