Why Robotics Is Now the Right Time (Category Robotics)
I decided to start a new column about robotics, which is now of great interest from different sides. But I wonder why it's so dense. The answer is that robotics suddenly found itself at the point where several long lines of engineering came together.
1ая Industrial base Robots have long ceased to be fiction. according to the IFR (International Federation of Robotics)in 2024 year-round 542 Thousands of industrial robots, and annual installations hold higher 500 thousand This is the fourth year in a row. This is already a large production infrastructure.
2Achievements in AI In recent years, models have learned to work well with text, images, video and code. Now the next natural question is, can perception, language, and action be connected in the physical world? Hence the interest in VLA (vision-language-action) Models, embodied reasoning, robots that do not just recognize a scene, but try to understand a task and perform it with their hands, wheels or feet.
3Data and training Robotics has always had a problem: there are a lot of texts and pictures on the Internet, but not enough qualitative data about the actions of robots in the real world. That's why projects like this are so important. Open X-EmbodimentDifferent labs collect data from different types of robots and try to teach models to transfer skills between platforms. It’s not a “universal robot” yet, but it’s a noticeable shift toward reusable robotics intelligence.
4а Infrastructure Simulators, synthetic data, GPU, onboard compute, ROS (robot operating system)Isaac, MuJoCo and similar tools are gradually bringing robotics closer to a normal engineering discipline rather than the magic of the lab. It is still difficult, expensive and painful, but there is already a stack on which to build systematically.
5С Demand Production, warehouses, medicine, delivery, inspection, agriculture, human care, dangerous and repetitive operations. Wherever there is a shortage of people, a high cost of error, or a heavy physical routine, robotics ceases to be a beautiful demo and becomes an economic issue.
I think this is a good time to deal with this topic. Not because “everything is decided,” but vice versa: because the basic components are already mature enough, and most of the interesting questions are still open. I will be writing about robotics from time to time and will try to do it interestingly:) I will try to figure out for myself and for you where we have real engineering progress, and where marketing is just, why robots are so hard to leave the laboratory and why, despite this, something really important is happening in the topic.
