How to become more productive in IT, if you have already pumped your hard (Category Management)

I'm going to speak at the conference today. soft weekendThe first software offline conference in Russia (whatever it means). I can’t say that I like to talk purely about software, but this conference is organized by my friend, Andrei Smirnov, the author of the podcast.Frontend WeekendWhere am I? walked I visited last year. So I decided to tell you something out of a series of qualities and skills that are important to everyone, to great engineers and good managers.

The report will consist of 4 parts, which are described below, and the focus will be on the third point, or rather the skills and abilities in addition to the hard skills that have helped me personally grow throughout my career.

1) Why do we need soft skills? In the modern world, development processes are becoming more complex, the area of responsibility of IC (individual contributor) It’s growing and includes system design, operation, data, security. (more specifically in my story About modern SDE and SDLC) To combat this complexity, different abstractions are usually used, for example, for infra it is IaaS.> PaaS -> SaaS -> ...(more specifically in my story About cloud technologies for Fintech School) We all live in a complex and chaotic world. (complex and chaotic from the Cynefin framework)

2) How to grow in such conditions There are two standard roads for engineers: the individual contributor or the manager. In both, you need to be able to show leadership at some level. Conventionally, you can grow to middle + IC only on hard ones, but then...(detail here) For example, in T there is a matrix for an engineer of the type: scope, impact, complexity, leadership, improvement. This matrix assesses the achievements of engineers in T-growth (more post) T-growth is the process by which promotions are carried out in T. The initiator is the employee himself, who prepares an application for a promotion taking into account his achievements, resting on the fact that he closed the axes of the above matrix, and also attaches artifacts that this proves.

3) What skills and abilities will help to show leadership and grow in such conditions Ability to plan your time (If you are lucky enough to have your team.) Ability and willingness to take responsibility (And the main thing is to bring difficult things to the end.) Communication skills with colleagues and contractual capacity (this part often fades) Self-motivation and motivation skills of others (However, if you understand the issue, then external motivation is rather stimulation.) The importance of curiosity and the desire to dig deeper to really understand how something works (or rather doesn't work)

4) The Importance of Hard Skills as a Basis for Further Growth (Don't make bags.) If you rock a software skill with a missing base in the form of hard skills, it will be a shaky foundation that can collapse at any moment. And some companies without them, in principle, can not get - for example, we have interviews for engineers on programming, development language and system design. This set effectively weeds out masters of the spoken genre.

P.S. There will be a recording of the performance and then I will share it on this channel.
