Machine, Platform, Crowd (Car, platform, crowd) (AI column)
More than a year ago, I read a book called Machine, Platform, Crowd and planned to write a review... but it was a long time late. I returned to this book after reflecting on what I learned from the ten-month MBA program I am graduating with this week. I’ve already written a brief review of this program, noting that the Creating Value with Global Platforms module is actually fully covered in the book that we’ll discuss briefly today. In this module, we looked at the platform business model. In fact, the easiest way to talk about digital platforms is to talk about them all around us. In these platforms, the network effect is significant, in which the value of goods becomes greater the more people use them. Digital platforms also often have the property that their operation is accompanied by marginal costs close to zero. This means that platforms tend to be larger and usually only a few platforms in each category survive. As a result, the platform economy leads to a pronounced Matthew effect. “For to everyone who has it will be given and multiplied, but from him who has not it will also be taken away.”
Amazingly, Machine, Platform, Crowd looks at the impact of cars and crowds in addition to platforms:) Throughout the book there is a reference to the hidden knowledge and paradox of Polani. "We know more than we can tell."
In general, the book is very good and useful for improving our understanding of our digital future.)
