Research Insights #35 materials: an environment for agents (#AI4SDLC)
I have gathered the materials for the solo Research Insights Made Simple episode from October 8, 2026, “Harness engineering: an environment for agents.” I explored the experience of the OpenAI team that entrusted all the code for an internal product to Codex, then described it in “Harness engineering,” which I have already discussed.
In the episode I covered:
🔸 What an agent needs to know about a project
Decisions from messages and engineers’ heads need to become accessible to the executor. A short AGENTS.md helps locate architecture, plans, and requirements; a huge instruction document quickly becomes stale.
🔸 How to let an agent check its own work
A separate application instance, a browser, logs, metrics, and traces. Otherwise, “make it faster” remains only a wish.
🔸 How to turn architecture into feedback
Verifiable module boundaries and linters that explain what was violated and how to fix it. Within those boundaries, the agent retains implementation freedom.
🔸 Where technical debt comes from
An agent copies both good and bad patterns. Recurring comments can become rules and small background corrections.
🔸 How to measure results
Accepted tasks, human time, defects, and the cost of runs. The epilogue covers Symphony and the move from manually managing sessions to coordinating tasks.
In the original article, the team estimates a roughly tenfold speedup. This is the authors’ assessment for a new internal product without a control group; it does not prove the same effect in an existing system. Individual mechanisms should be transferred with testing on your own tasks.

If you have already adapted a repository for agents, tell us where the biggest gap turned out to be: knowledge, tools, or verification of the result?
