Scion: Anthropic’s Git Replacement for Agent Development (#DevTools)

Agents write code, and development infrastructure starts to choke. At Anthropic, this led to a new version control system: Scion. Agents helped build it too.

On October 15, 2026, at 17:00, in solo Research Insights Made Simple episode #39, I will discuss “Redesigning source control at Anthropic”. This is the team’s engineering report on how working with code changes when a repository’s main clients become always-connected agents and CI.

Two things particularly interest me: familiar database ideas in Scion’s design, and changing guarantees around merges. What do we gain by accepting changes into shared history faster? And what must we then check before deployment?

In the episode: — why Anthropic moved history, merge, and rebase operations to the server; — how the change log, derived read structures, and immutable object caches work; — what actually became faster in the final chart, and why those numbers cannot be applied to development as a whole; — which guarantees change with post-merge checks, and how to bind release approval to a specific verified artifact; — how to give an agent a stable base while detecting conflicts with a moving main branch earlier.

A discussion for engineers, architects, and platform teams adopting coding agents who want to understand what will need to change around them.
