Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2024 (Category Management)

For the past several years, I have taken part in Stack Overflow’s developer survey and then studied the results with great interest. This year, a beautiful website presents them with excellent visualizations in 7 categories. Here are the points I found important in each.

1. Developer Profile: who took the survey

  • The top 5 countries by participation were the US, Germany, India, the UK, and Ukraine.
  • Some 66% hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
  • Some 82% prefer learning programming online.
  • Some 90% read API and SDK documentation to learn.

2. Technology

  • PostgreSQL is the most popular database, used by 49%.
  • Docker is the most popular technology, used by 59%.
  • Jira and Confluence are the most popular asynchronous-work tools.
  • JavaScript, Python, and SQL are widely wanted and admired, but Rust is the most admired, at 83%.
  • Some 73% want to work with Svelte, another frontend framework.
  • Most ChatGPT users want to continue using it, at 75%; competitors such as Replit Ghostwriter and Tabnine have figures about 2 times lower.
  • ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot are the most popular AI tools.

3. AI adoption in development

  • Some 76% plan to use AI tools in development this year.
  • The top 3 use cases are documenting code, 81%; testing code, 80%; and writing code, 76%.
  • Some 70% do not see AI as a threat to their jobs.
  • The main concerns are incorrect information, 79%, and source attribution, 65%.

4. Work

  • Some 84% are employed, mostly full-time, with some working part-time or freelance.
  • Hybrid work is most common at 40%, followed by fully remote at 38% and fully on-site at 20%.
  • API access matters when adopting technology: 75% say they are more likely to approve a technology if it offers API access.
  • Median salaries across almost all stacks fell by around 10 thousand dollars from the previous year.

5. Community

  • Some 93% visit Stack Overflow several times a month.
  • They come for answers to their questions.
  • People learning to code visit more frequently.

6. Professional Developers

  • Some 25% of individual contributors, or ICs, have 1–4 years of experience. Most participating ICs are in the early or middle stages of their careers, while people managers tend to be in the middle or later stages.
  • ICs account for 87% of respondents and managers for 13%.

7. Methodology

  • The survey had 65,437 respondents, of whom 48,019 shared salary information.
