Staff Engineer. Leadership beyound the management track (Category Management)

A few days ago, I started reading Will Larson’s book, which is very cool about Staff+ engineers who went beyond the boundaries of the Senior track of individual contributors. I wonder how the author built the book: Half of it consists of his thoughts on what roles Staff Engineers play, what their work looks like, how they get their nameplates, how companies change. The second half is an interview collection. 14 Different Staff+ Engineers from Different Companies (Dropbox, Slack, Stripe, Uber, etc)

The book is awesomely interesting, and I notice that many of the things I’ve described are also being done in my current role, perhaps because it’s about technical leadership, not the manager’s snare:) When I finish the book, I will write a short sammari, but I can already recommend it for reading.
