Lovers of mathematics (Category Math)
Yesterday I attended the premiere of this documentary by Olga Azhnakina at the Central House of Filmmakers in Moscow. The film tells the stories of three young mathematical scientists: Alexander Beznosikov, Darina Dvinsky and Alexander Gasnikov. Interestingly, their stories are told in the voice-over of the main characters, but at the same time we see how they work in leading scientific centers, including MIPT, Skoltech, HSE, Innopolis and Sirius. When I watched the film, I remembered how I liked mathematics, how I studied at ZFTS, and then at Phystech and how I thought that I would become a scientist, but went into the industry and the last few years. 20 I've been working in IT for years:) I did not become a scientist, but after receiving a specialty in applied mathematics and physics, I applied it to solving work problems with varying success. If you go back to the film, then yesterday after the very viewing there was an open microphone and questions from the hall, which were answered by the director and the main characters of the film and this is what was discussed there. 1) Why is this movie about mathematicians? The director replied that initially she had a "stereotypical vision of mathematical scientists" as boring and unmodern people. The film aims to break this stereotype by portraying mathematicians as "free, creative, creative young people." 2) What are the challenges and obstacles that scientists face? Do the guys seem to be doing well in the movie? The answer was that not everything works. For example, the part where Alexander Gasnikov decides to become not just a scientist, but a scientific functionary, taking up the post of rector of Innopolis - there is a nerve and overcoming yourself. By the way, I'm right here. flashback duality of A-Janus and W-Janus from "Monday Begins on Saturday" 3) Why is the movie so short? It's only half an hour, but it looks like it's in one breath. 4) Why does the movie end with the main character’s tango? The answer is about the beauty of mathematics, which can be compared to a beautiful dance.
There were many more questions and comments from the audience, but the audience gathered gratefully and everyone appreciated this documentary and its usefulness in popularizing the work of scientists among the younger generation. I also enjoyed the film, plus it was nice to see the entourage of those places where I spent a lot of time, gnawing granite science:)
P.S. While watching the movie, I remembered Eduard Frenkel, author of Love and Math: The Heart of Hidden Reality (Love and Mathematics.)It's a story that I found similar in mood, and it reveals the beauty and elegance of mathematics by comparing it to a work of art.
