Accelerate: Measure Delivery, Not Lines of Code

A central distinction is between a maturity model with one prescribed ladder and a set of capabilities that an organization develops in context. Older measures such as lines of code, velocity, and utilization are easy to optimize without improving outcomes. DORA instead combines delivery speed and stability in four related measures.

Metrics cannot be separated from their environment. The episode covers Westrum's culture model, continuous delivery, loosely coupled architecture, and team autonomy. Shift-left security and testing, an automated pipeline, and lean product practices are treated as system capabilities rather than isolated rituals.

The second half examines surveys, question validation, statistical relationships, and cluster analysis. Performance-group thresholds change between reports, so DORA metrics should not become individual targets. The model is more useful as a diagnostic map for experiments validated with local evidence.
