Databases and Platforms: Logic in the Database Hits the Hiring Ceiling

Konstantin Evteev leads infrastructure and platforms at X5 Digital. He grew up in Tula, studied information security, and joined a research institute in his second year. Over five years, database work grew into deployments of hardware and software systems across Russia.

After moving to Moscow, Konstantin migrated large systems from Microsoft SQL Server to PostgreSQL without stopping the business. He then spent six years at Avito, moving from database expert to team lead and platform owner. When that model stopped scaling, the teams decomposed the monolith, applied sagas, and built a data bus.

Konstantin participated in the PostgreSQL community and presented logical-replication failures at PGCon. A rare need may never enter the open-source mainstream, so companies maintain forks or their own systems. This work produced an in-house high-availability cluster and an engineering hackathon.

During the pandemic, Konstantin joined an X5 delivery service: the team had about thirty people, with four months left before a new application launch. He started a data platform, incident management, test automation, an internal platform, and integrations. The area grew to about one hundred engineers excluding support. His foundation for growth is durable knowledge, strong peers, and new challenges.
