What we discussed on the recording

Alexey Tarasov explains why a large company needs an engineering track beyond senior. At that level, engineers expand their scope and influence, solve cross-cutting architectural problems, and keep doing technical work instead of being forced into people management.

Staff+ is a set of roles: an embedded technical lead, an expert solver, a landscape architect, or a manager's right hand. Each relies on leadership without formal authority. The engineer persuades, accepts being wrong, connects teams, and keeps customer value visible behind technical decisions.

Internal growth uses a competency matrix, planned assignments, and independent review by profession leaders. Rotation helps when a product no longer offers sufficient scope. For hiring, the company added an Architecture and Software Development Process interview beside language and System Design because management interviews assessed technical leadership poorly.

The interview covers experience, model situations, and the candidate's questions. It evaluates decisions, business communication, evolutionary architecture, documentation, trade-offs, and personal contribution. These practices grew into RFCs, architecture reviews, and platform products, so a new engineer starts with organizational knowledge rather than a blank page.
