[2/3] Working Backwards: Insights, Stories, and Secrets from Inside Amazon (Amazon strategy) (Category Management)
Continuing first-time I'm going to talk about the first part of the book, which is what it means to be an Amazonian. In this section, the authors describe the following points:
Principle 1. Leadership sets principles Jeff Bezos wrote from the beginning. 14 Amazon’s leadership principles to guide new employees. He did this when he realized that he was not in time to personally teach the principles of new employees. Now they've infiltrated everything Amazon does. Now the principles are 16 Customer Obsession, Ownership, Invent and Simplify, Are Right, A Lot, Learn and Be Curious, Hire and Develop the Best, Insist on the Highest Standards, Think Big, Bias for Action, Frugality, Earn Trust, Dive Deep, Have Backbone; Disagree and Commit, Deliver Results, Strive to be Earth's Best Employer, Success and Scale Bring Broad Responsibility. Details. readable It's on Amazon. The bottom line for readers is to create a set of leadership principles that you believe in, and then create mechanisms and processes that will strengthen them day by day.
Principle 2. Use hiring employees to gradually raise the bar. A distinctive feature of the hiring process at Amazon is the involvement of a specialist in raising the bar. (BarRaiser). Its job is to make sure that you hire smarter, cooler employees over time, rather than turning a blind eye to candidates’ shortcomings because you’re overwhelmed with work and need people urgently.
Principle 3. Organize an organization with single-threaded leaders (single-threaded). For each Amazon project or initiative, one executive is appointed to handle the project. You also need team members who will also be focused on making the project work. There is no multitasking at Amazon. This is similar to the stream-aligned teams from Team Topologies. (detail here). But it's still cooler, because executives don't focus on a bunch of activities.
Principle 4. Communicate with stories and six-page pages. Powerpoint is a means of entertainment, for example, for presentations at conferences. But for the transmission of complex information, it is not suitable. It's better for that. Prepare a six-page document and ask everyone to read it at the beginning of each meeting. Their composition forces people to concretize, learn to formulate thoughts and sharpens their thinking. Details about 6-pager can be read here
Principle 5. Start with the desired customer service quality When developing new ideas or products, always work in the opposite direction from the desired customer experience. The best way to do this is to write a press release and FAQ frequently. (frequently asked). Use these tools to solve complex problems right away. In general, this chapter is about working backwards and applying the first principle of leadership, Customer Obsession.
Principle 6. Manage your business inputs, not results Put the customer at the center of all performance indicators. Emphasize the resources you manage and control and the activities that will bring the desired results. Do it well, and output metrics like revenue and stock price will take care of themselves.
