How to Learn: Unlocking the Brain's Secrets • Barbara Oakley & Charles Humble • GOTO 2024 (Rubric #SelfDevelopment)
Interesting. podcast Goto, where Charles Hummel interviews Barbara Oakley. Barbara is the author of a very popular courseLearning How to LearnOn Coursera. For this course, Barbara wrote a book, Think Like a Mathematician. ("A Mind For Numbers")Which I've been talking about before. told. And in this podcast, many interesting topics were raised.
- For different subjects, different methods are effective, for example, for learning languages and mathematics.
- Interestingly, Barbara herself went from a linguist scientist to a professor of engineering. The book “Thinking in Numbers” that I mentioned above is devoted to teaching methods suitable for STEM disciplines.
- Now there is a crisis of repeatability of research results in general, as well as research in education. Barbara cites specific examples where popular but ineffective teaching methods were accompanied by scientific articles, the results of which could not be repeated.
- Barbara talks about two brains: focused and distracted. For effective learning, you need to be able to switch between modes
- Exercise helps in learning, boosting cognitive abilities and academic performance
- Training helps to develop neurotrophic factor of the brain BDNF, which helps neurons connect with each other, and also contributes to better learning
- Sleep helps the brain process and consolidate new knowledge, and proper nutrition, including plants, nuts and dark chocolate, promotes brain health.
- Mindful practice helps in learning – it is important to practice performing complex tasks, as growth on standard tasks without challenges is much slower.
- For learning, as for work, psychological safety is important, which means respect and the ability to challenge. In effective teams, it is important to challenge and discuss uncomfortable topics. You can read more about it. Aristotle Here, the guys at Google investigated the factors that make teams effective, and the most important factor was psychological safety.
- Learn how to understand working and long-term memory. Working memory allows you to temporarily retain information. Long-term memory stores information for a long time. The hippocampus enhances memory and interacts with working memory. The hippocampus enhances memory and interacts with working memory. You can read more about memory types in the book. The Programmer's Brain"which I've talked about before." told
- The hippocampus quickly forms and destroys connections in the brain. Cranking before the test is ineffective, as the connections quickly disappear. Repetition at intervals helps to remember information better.
- Memory is stored in connections between neurons. These connections form memory like bits in a computer.
- Metaphors help connect concepts and understand new ideas. They also help them remember better.
- Barbara describes how she uses AI in learning by summarizing complex documents before she begins studying them.
- Teachers should teach students effective learning. AI can help them teach, but teachers must be ready for the new technology. n
- Our knowledge rusts and memories disappear if not used. Dendritic processes can die if skills are not used. The use of knowledge helps to restore forgotten skills.
- There are many more areas in the study of the brain that are covered in the fog of the unknown and therefore further research can and should be carried out here, which will bring us understanding and amazing results.
