Facility 4 - Lesson. 26 “The author's work with a literary agent. Expert - Galina Bocharova (Category Writing)
The next lesson dealt with the question of who are literary agents and what they can help a novice or continuing author. This was told by Galina Bocharova, an experienced literary agent. The main things I learned from the lesson are
- The importance of literary agents abroad is quite high, especially in the United States and Europe, where they play a key role. In Russia, their influence is limited.
- But even in the Russian market, the number of agents is growing – this is due to the interest in translated books, the growth of the level of Russian-speaking authors and the development of digital platforms such as Bookmate.
- Authors can collaborate with agents to promote books, but this is not always necessary. It is important to choose the right publishers and properly prepare manuscripts, but the authors themselves can do this.
- Contracts with publishers require careful study. Particular attention should be paid to the rights to film adaptations, translations and theatrical productions, which can generate significant income.
- Selling film rights, translations, and foreign markets can be challenging but lucrative. Agents actively work with producers and foreign partners.
- Agents get commission (usually 20%) advances, royalties and other income. Additional revenue is possible through digital services and project production.
- Publishers may require the active participation of the author in the promotion. The agent assists in this process, but the author must also be involved.
- Agents are willing to work with newcomers if they see potential. However, this requires great effort and risk.
- There are agents and scouts on the market. The agent represents the interests of the author for a commission, and the scout works for the publishing house for a fixed fee.
