How to take useful notes (How to take smart notes, Zettelkasten)
This book by Zonke Arens, a teacher of the philosophy of education, is devoted to the Zettelkasten method, which allows you to build your knowledge base from notes created using this system invented by Niklas Luman. In the foreword of the book, the author reminds us about the importance of writing in human life, but notes that most materials on this subject are devoted to writing essays, books, well, at least working correspondence. And he invites readers to learn how to summarize their small ideas and insights, from which then larger works like cubes are collected:) This, in turn, helps to overcome the fear of a blank sheet of paper.
Part part 1 - Introduction.
1) Everything you need to know This chapter begins with the author comparing simple planning with a clear system of organization of work and shows that the second one is better. And this system turns out to be the "note box" of Nicholas Luman, who wrote notes about what he read, put them in one place, then came up with a classification system for them, and then tried to build cross-category connections for his notes. And then from these notes inside the drawer came books that Niklas wrote a few pieces a year:) In this chapter, the author devotes a lot of time to the biography of Luman and how he worked with his boxes: he made notes with unique idshniki, then used hyperlinks. (hand-held) To make connections between notes, he also had separate topics to mark notes, plus a pointer to refer to notes, which were the starting point for the topic and contained a set of references to other notes. 2) Everything you need to do In this chapter, the author describes how it is convenient to divide the work into 2 half: drafting (Preferably from already prepared notes) and further editing and proofreading. As a result, there is such a step-by-step algorithm for writing texts:
- Take everyday notes.
- Make notes on literature.
- Make permanent notes. Add new permanent notes to your drawer Develop your topics and research projects from the bottom up When you have enough ideas, decide which topic to write about.
- Turn your notes into a draft. Edit and subtract the manuscript Interestingly, I plan to compile my first book in the coming year:) 3) Everything you need on hand Here the author says about the tools: paper and pen for notes, card for reference information, the actual notebook, text editor. I'm putting it all together inside my Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra tablet, and I have a bunch of notes there:) 4) A few things that should not be forgotten Here the author says that the tools are only as good as you know how to use them.
The second and third parts of the book are discussed in the following posts: 2, 3 and 4
